Scottish country dancingScottish Country Dancing

Did you ever want to do more than tap your toes to great fiddle music? Scottish country dancing is the way to really "move to the music" of those lively jigs, reels or stately Strathspeys. This is the traditional social dancing of Scotland which is enthusiastically danced by over 25,000 members of the 162 branches of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) worldwide.

Not to be confused with the more athletic Highland dancing, country dances are performed in "sets" of three or more couples by folks of all ages and backgrounds. It is closely related to American square dancing and contra dancing. A variety of steps and patterns form simple to challenging for all levels of dancers.

The San Diego branch of the RSCDS offers a variety of classes with teachers of international reputation. Classes are offered at several locations around the county. Dress is comfortable and casual - you need not wear a kilt - though we all enjoy the "lilt of the kilt" in our dances. It is also not necessary to bring a partner; in fact, part of the etiquette encourages dancing with other partners, which adds to the sociability of the experience.

In addition to attending classes members soon progress from beginner ranks to enjoy our Friday night social dancing at the Casa del Prado in Balboa Park. Frequent dances are organized throughout Southern California and feature live music by some of the world' best traditional musicians.
