History of the Scottish Highland Games Athletics

Highland games are held in spring and summer in Scotland to celebrate the Scottish and Celtic cultures. The name denotes the athletic competitions in the world that are usually conducted under the auspices of local Caledonian society and believed in traditional customs. The highland games originated from impromptu competition at clan assemblies by hunting, military exercises, and the conduct of clan business.

History

They were initially a form of war game where the strongest and the bravest soldier would triumph. Highland games remain a potent expression of a form of Scottishness with home and abroad to celebrate pipes, drums, dancing, and brutes around the world in tribute to the motherland.

The first historical reference to highland games- type events in Scotland during the reign of King Malcolm III (1057-1093) summoned men to find a royal messenger. These games are said to have a selection of ablest men in the clan Chieftain’s household, but musicians and dancers also added prestige to the clan. The Ceres games Fife were the oldest games, and in 1314, Highland Games began in Scotland continuously. Scottish continues to thrive more than 700 years after the King of Scots, Robert the Bruce, granted a charter for the village to hold a market and fair to acknowledge the farmers, labourers, artisans, and the local people. The first Highland games in the USA happened in New York in 1836. The Caledonian Club of San Francisco held its first games in 1866. Today, in addition to the games all across Scotland, there are more than 200 annual games and gatherings across the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

Many centuries ago, Highland games revolved around athletic and sports competitions, other activities were also part of festivals, where athletics are the games and other activities are just entertainment. These societies were rapidly formed in the 19th and early 20th Centuries to reflect the emigration of Scots with Waipu, New Zealand, formed in 1871 to help the Scottish arrivals.

Such societies were widely formed in North America to draw together new arrivals and act as a reunion point. The first games were held in Antigonish, Nova Scotia is known for the homes of thousands of Scots. After a few years, the largest event names “Grandfather Mountain Highland Games” held in North Carolina with attendance of 30,000. Now, Highland Games are held across Europe- particularly in German, Netherlands- Indonesia, Japan, South Africa, and Brazil.
